This Week at the Herdic House

You read a-rightly—the Herdic House is hosting a few private events tonight (Wednesday) but we still have space for diners! However, we’ve moved our Blue Plate Special, and its frequent crowds, to tomorrow evening, Thursday, Oct. 10, beginning at 5:00. But it’s an early fall Blue Plate if ever we made one—comforting, veggie-full and seriously October…Pasta by Deb’s organic fettuccine tossed with roasted Misty Mountain Farm sausage, roasted sweet peppers and basil-laced ratatouille! The Blue Plate is now $18 at our House and $20 to go (but our number of to-go orders is always very limited). We’ll hope to see you out!

And note: October 17 (next Thursday) is the last time we’ll be shifting our Blue Plate to Thursday night—then back to Wednesdays we go. (But we’ll still be open for regular dining on October 16!)

We find around the Herdic that Liz gets a little too much of the limelight. Sure, she owns the place and yes, she occasionally rules with an iron fist, but we have a bunch of brilliant employees, and the ones behind those swinging kitchen doors tend to miss out on the renown. Many folks got acquainted with Sam when she made a slew of delicious Mexican food back in March, and the whole city likely knows how fabulous Andrew’s crab ravioli are (if you don’t, well, hop to it!). But Hunter, our grill man, is also an excellent cook in his own right—and it’s his turn to shine this Friday evening, as he concocts a menu featuring several of his specialties.

Hunter, the child of two former Herdic employees who met while in our employ (and conceived Hunter, but that’s another story), grew up in and around kitchens across Williamsport, and has worked in them since he was old enough to wrangle a chef’s knife. (This is his second stint in the Herdic kitchen, and he remains one of the fastest line chefs we’ve ever employed.) And he comes by his first name honestly—a son of a frequent hunter, he himself is an avid hunter and fisherman, and we weren’t surprised when all his chosen dishes featured delicious local animals front and center. So come on down to taste some of Hunter’s favorite foods this Friday evening! And maybe we’ll even let him off the line long enough to say hello to the dining room…

  • Bulleit bourbon boulevardier with housemade rhubarb shrub and Campari
  • Mostly classic Italian wedding soup with Misty Mountain meatballs
  • Chicken livers from Landis Farm sautéed with mushroom, onion and bacon, and finished with candied hot pepper
  • Grilled Open Prairie strip steak topped with fried oysters and drizzled with remoulade sauce, then served over crispy fingerling potatoes and roasted sweet peppers
  • Chocolate-plum cheesecake with a chocolate shortbread crust (Hunter refused to take on dessert, so we’re offering his favorite of Liz’s cheesecakes…)

And a quick mention that ticket sales are now open for our November 16 anniversary gala! Tickets are $85, and include a champagne tasting, caviar, ample and delectable hors d’oeuvres stations and live music. Call 570.322.0165 or email or, you know, stop on in to the bar to purchase tickets…
