This Week at the Herdic House

Brrrrr! It’s frigid out there this week, and we can’t speak for any of you, but here at the Herdic we’re struggling to keep the pipes thawed in our chilly kitchen. But we’re expecting to have the House cozy and bright by this evening, as we open up for the most comforting Blue Plate we know: Landis Farm chicken gravy over thyme biscuits and mashed potatoes. Plus we’ll have one of Marcia’s soup recipes on the docket, cream of celery with toasted almonds, and a grilled shrimp appetizer with roasted sweet peppers and a basil parmesan cream—toasty warm and satisfied is our MO this evening. The Blue Plate, as always, is $18 at our House and $20 to go. We’ll hope to see you out tonight! But we’ve laid in extra to-go Blue Plates, just in case leaving the house for dinner isn’t on your agenda this evening…

Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving our Thursday night feature that feigns healthiness, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled spicy shrimp, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Hannah’s cocktail feature will be another mezcalita variation: a jalapeno mezcalita with a spicy-salt rim, to heat up this chill weather for you…

Well, this weather may not be to everyone’s tastes, but the youngest of us here at the Herdic have been glorying in all this snow, and in the freezing temperatures keeping it here. Liz’s kids are heading to the Herdic this evening to build tunnels in our modest parking lot snow pile, and they spent most of this past weekend in their snowpants and earmuffs, rather than out. For kids who’ve grown used to our recently snowless PA winters, this snowfall is like a belated Christmas present—perfect for playing, especially when it’s followed by hot chocolate…

However, we’re concerned that when Sam rejoins us in the kitchen tomorrow, after 3 weeks in Mexico, she’s in for a bitter shock indeed. That’s why we’ve decided to work up a menu of some delicious Mexican dishes on Friday, to help welcome her back. And Liz and fam thoroughly enjoyed the wide variety of foods and preparations they sampled in Playa del Carmen as well, so it will be our pleasure to recreate some of our favorite dishes..and hopefully bring a bit of that warmth to Wilpo in the process! Check out the menu for Friday evening this week…but we’ll let Sam make any modifications she’d like when she returns, so there may be last minute changes!

  • Chili con queso with Misty Mountain chorizo and crispy tortilla chips
  • Shrimp aguachile (kind of like ceviche) with salsa verde and red onion
  • Cochinita pibil: orange and spice braised pork butt from Misty Mountain Farm served with pickled red onion, refried beans and rice
  • Crispy churros with creamy chocolate for dipping
