Batter up! this week at the Herdic House

What lovely sleeping weather it’s been since last week’s deluge…but we’re surely hoping it doesn’t portend an early fall! But for this week at least, the veggies are still gorgeous, and copious—the Blue: a Moroccan-style stuffed pepper with Misty Mountain lamb and beef, chickpeas and cilantro, served over a roasted tomato coulis and finished with herbed yogurt sauce and feta. The Blue Plate, as always, is $15 at our House and $17 to go (but our number of to-go orders is always very limited). We’ll hope to see you out tonight!

Don’t miss our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus a new Thursday night feature to beat the heat: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with Delmonico steak tagliata, fresh-cut fries and Liz’s parmesan ranch…plus Hannah will be mixing up white peach bellinis at the bar!

After some hefty storms last week, and lovely weekend of sunshine at the beach, Liz ventured into her backyard this morning to find all of the tomatoes ripe in one fell swoop. Yikes! What’s a working mom to do?

And here at the Herdic, the situation is perilously similar, as we get offers of sweet heirlooms from every quarter…and we’re loathe to miss out on the deliciousness we know is in store. So while Liz the mother will be frantically drying and roasting tomatoes at home tonight at midnight, here at the Herdic she’s proposed a different approach: an heirloom tomato menu for Friday, complete with all our favorite varieties and dishes. It may not offer solace to all those frantically hoping for a last minute seat at our sold-out 40th anniversary tea on Saturday, but we’re excited, at the least, for some late-summer tomato delight in our Friday night!

  • Hannah’s famed Sungold tomato smash (not technically an heirloom, but they’re so delicious we let them slide)
  • Striped tomato gazpacho, finished with a sweet corn and basil salad
  • Mixed heirloom tomato caprese, with fresh mozzarella, garden basil, spicy garlic oil and sweet balsamic glaze
  • Grilled lamb rib chops from Misty Mountain Farm with a savory Cherokee tomato and thyme jam, roasted fingerling potatoes and wilted mizuna, finished with crispy capers
  • Irene’s peach custard kuchen—a family favorite
PS Many thanks to our friend Morgan Tramontana for the great portrait of a delighted Anais and Linden above, as they savored the many treasures heaped upon them by last night’s Little League parade. There were candy, chips, gatorade, mini-baseballs and a cornucopia of other freebies. What an excellent start to two weeks of baseball festivities! Next up, we’re planning their first trip to the LL stadium. Let the baseball mania begin…
