This Week at the Herdic House
A quick look at the upcoming weather has thrown our enjoyment of the past few warm and sunny days into stark relief, now that we’ve realized they were but one of those tempting spring chimeras, wherein you put away your snow boots and your winter coats in a frenzy of excitement, only to wake to a dusting of snow a few mornings later and realize that it was nothing but a tease…or perhaps merciful spring giving us a taste of her coming bounty in the midst of the winter chill. In the spirit of helping our customers and ourselves adapt to the upcoming cooler temps, our Blue Plate this week will be reassuring comfort food from the vaults: Misty Mountain Farm meatloaf, served with mashed potatoes and roasted broccoli. The Blue Plate, as always, is $18 at our House and $20 to go. And the soup this evening will be an old favorite as well—Marcia’s Court and Willow carrot, adapted by Marcia from an old and delightful French recipe…and we’ll be serving up crispy calamari to boot!
We’ll be hosting Preservation Williamsport’s Annual Dinner tomorrow evening, and honoring the remarkable contributions of the inimitable Nan Young to historic preservation in our community. With all that activity, we’re afraid our bar will be too crowded to host our Happy Hour this Thursday, so we’re canceling Thursday Happy Hours, but we’ll be open and serving dinner all night on Thursday! And be sure to stop in next Thursday, when we’re switching it up from our Pittsburgh salad, and making some Misty Mountain Farm hamburgers, by special request: exactly what type of burger we haven’t yet decided, but we’re pretty sure it’ll hit the spot…
But this week, our most exciting menu will actually arrive on Saturday evening, March 14, when we’re hosting guest chefs Anjum and Shazra Khan, a mother-daughter team who will be preparing food from India. While Anjum hails from Montoursville, her daughter Shazra now actually lives in Australia, so we feel as though this really is a globe-trotting sort of event indeed. As we did last week, we’ll be donating the profits from this week’s menu to Thrive International Programs, an excellent, hardworking, local organization—but the excitement is in the prix fixe menu of classic Indian fare, below…
- Mango lassi, with mango pulp, housemade yogurt and cardamom, available with a healthy shot of rum for an upcharge
- Potato, pea and paneer samosa, with a tamarind dipping sauce
- Creamy butter chicken, with chicken breast from Landis Farm, garlic, ginger, cashew and tomato, served over cumin rice
- Kheer, a classic Indian rice pudding with raisin, toasted pistachio, and saffron cream
- Cost of prix fixe food menu will be $65
P.S. Thanks to all those from all parties who signed our Home Rule Commission nomination form this past week! And a million thanks to Andy, pictured above, who has worked tirelessly to get signatures for this initiative and many others—and has done many other wonderful things in our community to boot, from supporting and volunteering at local non-profits to enabling young Liz to see independent films at the CAC with his generous gifts of movie passes (thereby starting her long fascination with the big world around us and the incredible foods cooked in it).
And if you missed signing the petition, you’ll have ample chance to do your part in the primary in May, by supporting the Home Rule question on the ballot, and opening up the opportunity for the City to study Home Rule and draft a charter…before it comes back to the voters for a final vote in 2027. Stay tuned for further updates!
