This Week at the Herdic House

We’ve spent our restaurant weekend enjoying these ongoing, delightful and totally unseasonable temperatures—and we’re returning to work with a delectable Blue Plate that has a little of the bright sunshine we’ve had such an abundance of lately: Classic Orange Chicken in the Chinese-American style, with Landis Farm chicken, local ginger and fresh squeezed orange juice, served over local broccoli and long grain rice. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. We’ll hope to see you out tonight!

Don’t miss our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus our Thursday night feature that pretends to be healthy, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled tenderloin tips, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch…
Welcome to the first day of…the rest of the year, huh? That darn election is finally over, and we’re glad to have put it behind us, though it still feels as if the whole country is a tinderbox in so many ways right now. But central Pennsylvania in particular actually is on the verge of conflagration. Please be careful if you’re out in the woods over these next few weeks! The leaves are delightfully crunchy, yes, but that’s because our region (and 87% of the US) is in a drought right now. The fire danger in our gorgeous state forest land is through the roof right now, and forest fires are cropping up all over the place.

But not all of those fires are in wooded areas! If you read online about the vandalization of cars at the Pajama Factory in the pretty vicious run-up to yesterday’s election, one of the victims was our December artist Holly Patton Shull, who, in addition to being quite talented with paint, is also a poll worker and a wonderful human being who’d give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. In Holly’s giving spirit, we’re including a link to a go-fund-me page set up to help her out with expenses related to her primary vehicle being burned (as well as some of her artwork, which was in the vehicle). Please give if you can! And know that she’d do the same for you.

Here at the Herdic, we’ll be putting out fires all week too, as we host a series of large parties over the rest of this week. In the spirit of keeping calm and carrying on, we’re going to skip a featured menu—there’s plenty to keep us busy without one! But please note that we are completely booked this coming Friday evening, and, barring cancelations, won’t be able to accept any further reservations. But we’ll be pouring stiff drinks every other night this week, for those that stumble, dazed, into our bar, looking for respite and community and a bit of an escape from a polarized nation…
