This Week at the Herdic House

A lovely gilded day to delve into a little Greek fare tonight at the Herdic! Join us for a Blue Plate straight from the isles: a layered moussaka, made with Misty Mountain beef ragu, golden-fried local eggplant and bechamel. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go, like always—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. And as an appetizer, we’ll have actual street corn—grilled Tebbs corn on the cob with chipotle aioli, crumbled queso and cilantro—as we bid a too-effusive farewell to our beloved summer veggies…

And as a heads up, next week, the Herdic House will be closed for regular dining on Wednesday, October 8, due to an excess of bus tours in our little House. We’ll be offering the Blue Plate on Thursday, October 9 instead!

Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving our Thursday night feature that feigns healthiness, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled chimichurri cod loin, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Plus, Hannah will be mixing up fresh watermelon cosmos at the bar…

Oh dear—where has the year gone? We cooked a few exciting new dishes, had ourselves some good spring and summer times, and suddenly here it is October already and the final outdoor First Friday of the season (and Liz has yet to make it downtown for any of them, but who’s counting?) and we’ve got a wonderful artist to share with Wilpo for First Friday…

We’re very excited to be hosting an artist who’s brand new to the Herdic House this Friday, and especially one whose work is so well paired with our own establishment: Beth DeJesus England is opening a show of en plein air paintings of Historic District homes in our lounge on October 4 from 5-8 pm! The show features new paintings of several properties (including, of course, our own lovely establishment), painted over the course of this year.

In addition to her canvases, Beth will also have prints and notecards on hand, making her work accessible for a wide variety of pocketbooks—and we’re intending to get ourselves a bit of new stationery around these parts. But beyond our artistic features this weekend, we’ll also have the first truly autumnal menu out of the Herdic kitchen…which follows…

  • Roasted beet soup finished with lump crab and leek mousse
  • Grilled Misty Mountain Farm sausage with sweet potato mashed and a concord grape and port must
  • Grilled oregano-rubbed rack of lamb served over spiced eggplant, crispy chickpeas and feta
  • Local pear tarte tatin served with a scoop of paw-paw and rum ice cream
