This Week at the Herdic House
A simple and delicious Blue Plate this evening, ladies and gents—Misty Mountain Farm sausage, grilled and served with braised Italian greens, sweet peppers and polenta. Starting tonight, it’s $15 at the House and $17 to go, as we try to keep pace with product and labor cost increases…
And tomorrow, our Happy Hours continue! Join us from 5-7 pm on Thursday evenings at the bar for some cocktail specials—$2 off wines by the glass, $1 off beers by the bottle and a rotating $9 craft cocktail, plus we’ll be making classic Herdic tenderloin sandwiches with gruyere, caramelized onions and crispy french fries all night. And this week’s cocktail will be a Plentiful Peony, with peony simple syrup, vodka, fresh lemon juice and club soda …
Such a perfect Memorial Day weekend we haven’t seen yet—here’s hoping that everyone enjoyed theirs as much as we enjoyed ours, and that you got out to the creek and into the woods to renew your connection to the glorious Pennsylvania Wilds. While we were all recreating and relaxing this weekend, the spike in temperature brought out all the blossoms—with peonies draping bushes around the city, and roses practically flaming off the bushes up and down the streets. There’s not much of anywhere you can walk without being accosted by some type of sweet floral perfume right now, and it’s a sure delight—even more so because all these delightful blossoms are edible! We’ll be putting together dishes full of petals all week this week, and Friday night’s menu is a delighted nod to the wonders of early summer—full of asparagus, scallions, spinach and blossoms galore.
But even more importantly, we’re pleased as punch to host an artist this week who’s been spending a plentiful amount of time in the PA Wilds himself of late: Paul Bozzo, once an elementary art teacher in Mansfield (of whom Brooke has many fond memories) and an artist in his own right, has spent decades developing fascinating techniques for double exposed photos and layered textured prints. He’ll have some of both on display in our lounge on Friday evening, and he already has a handful of buyers lined up—fortunate souls who were here when he came by to check out our space. Come see what the fuss is about! Paul is a wonderful man and a talented artist who is very passionate about his technique.
And without further ado, Friday’s menu…
- Flowerpot: rose petal jam, peony simple syrup, fresh lemon, Hendricks gin and housemade elderflower liqueur
- Creamy asparagus soup finished with a chanterelle and spinach “salsa”
- Fresh asparagus topped with a poached farm egg and drizzled with chive hollandaise
- Prosciutto-wrapped Pacific halibut with an Italian asparagus and scallion budino, lemony arugula and toasted pinenuts
- Individual rhubarb custard tart drizzled with rose petal sauce
Thanks to everyone who came out to make last week’s Shad Smoke every bit as wild as any we’ve ever hosted. A good time was had by all!
