This Week at the Herdic House
True to our word, there will be no Blue Plate this week because the Herdic is still hosting and catering quite a few larger events on Wednesday and Thursday. But it’s not so crazy at the House that we don’t have space to return to our old Happy Hour habit this Thursday. From 5-7 pm, it’ll be $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass if you’re drinking them at the bar. In the kitchen, we’ll be making open-faced grilled tenderloin sandwiches with caramelized onions, horseradish dill mayo and melted gruyere, served with Hunter’s excellent potato chips…
And yet another reminder: our Blue Plate schedule for the month of October is still a bit wonky—Blue Plate nights will be on Thursday, 10/8; Wednesday, 10/14; Thursday, 10/22 and Wednesday, 10/28. Then we expect to settle all the way back to normal in November…well, as if we’re ever normal around here.
But on Friday, we’re bringing the First Friday party, with an opening by Ashlee Reitmeyer in our Lounge from 6-8 pm. Ashlee’s exuberant work (see above) is a great fit for the exhilarating autumn colors abounding around our region—colors she’s been channeling for the fabulous window art she’s currently crafting all over downtown. Stop in and check out her canvases on Friday, and stick around for an Oktoberfest menu served throughout the House, featuring our favorite German (and German-ish) menu items. There are many great cuisines in the world, but German food is uniquely suited to this time of year—lush, comforting, delicious with beer or a glass of gluhwein, and just heavy enough to keep that alcohol from getting the better of you.
- Gluhwein: mulled wine with oranges, cinnamon and rum
- German cheese soup, with bacon, seasonal veggies and beer, of course
- Local sausage sampler, featuring sausages from Misty Mountain, Shade Stone and Today Farms, as well as house-cured sauerkraut, homemade applesauce and whole grain mustard
- Misty Mountain Farm pork schnitzel, served over braised red cabbage and herbed spaetzle in a wild mushroom sauce
- Sachertorte (yes, it’s Austrian, but also delicious!): chocolate cake layered with apricot jam and iced with chocolate ganache…
PS If you see this lovely lady (decked out here in her Oktoberfest finery) around this week, wish her a happy birthday! Maggie has been everything to us here at the Herd: a server, a cook, an innkeeper, a host and, of course, a great friend who brings the good times. And she certainly looks lovely in her dirndl! We’re hoping she’ll bring her Oktoberfest spirit to our place on Friday…
