This Week at the Herdic House
Well, it was a lovely warm Monday and Tuesday while they lasted! Even Sunday stayed dry enough that Liz and the kids (and a couple other Herdic employees to boot) made the trek to Knoebel’s for WVIA Day. Knoebel’s, which is our favorite amusement park for a wide variety of reasons—vintage rides, running water, and all the trees and attendant shade, among others—is an even higher destination on our summer list now that we’ve figured out that it’s 100 years old this year. Just imagine all those excited Pennsylvanians in long skirts and parasols, worsted suits and boater hats, touring a brand new facility in 1926…and likely munching on similar funnel cakes to the one we wolfed down on Sunday.
But now that today has dawned a trifle wet and chilly, we’re preparing a Blue Plate from a warmer, drier climate to ward off the chill: pulled pork and sweet pepper enchiladas with queso, salsa verde and black beans. The Blue Plate, as always, is $18 at our House and $20 to go. You can reach us at 570-322-0165 to book a table! For the less adventurous (and those afflicted with a spring virus), we’ll be serving up chicken noodle soup too…plus crispy calamari as an appetizer!
Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving up tenderloin tip sandwiches this week, with caramelized onion, gruyere and horseradish mayo, with our new house favorite starch: the spiced up shoestring potatoes we’ve just put on our appetizer list…
Suddenly, shockingly, the asparagus gods smiled upon us last weekend, and sent 20 pounds of beautiful asparagus our way, with promises to increase the bounty this week…and such beautiful spears—tinged with purple, broad and strong, sweet like only local asparagus can be. Which is why we’re thrilled to present an asparagus menu for this Friday. Whether you’re feting a graduation, spoiling you mom a few days early, or just passionate about this flavor of early spring, call down to book a table and get a taste of the season!
- Fresh rhubarb sidecar
- Cream of asparagus soup with crispy prosciutto and hardboiled farm egg
- Poached farm egg over local asparagus, drizzled with chive hollandaise and viola petals
- Scallion and dill laced lump crab cakes, served over grilled asparagus and radish in a lemon-chipotle aioli
- Rhubarb crumb baby cakes with housemade orange-rhubarb ice cream
And of course, on Sunday, we’ll host a bevy of wonderful mothers for an afternoon dinner from 11:30-2:00. With a host of mom-friendly recipes like asparagus soup with crabmeat; fresh strawberry-macadamia salad; bacon, leek and asparagus quiche; and pistachio-crusted cod, it’s sure to be the start of a lovely afternoon for you and mom both. But we’re nearly completely booked up, so make your reservations soon to take your mom out in style! And as Marcia’s favorite tree peonies bloom early this year, we’ll be thinking of the important moms in our Herdic history…those who are no longer with us, like Daisy and Marcia, and those who will likely be hosting in our dining room on Sunday, like Gloria. Happy Mother’s Day to all!
