Half in shadow, half in light, this week at the Herdic House

This Week at the Herdic House

Oh such a harvest moon arose last night, in all its resplendent glory! While we failed to get an adequate photo (and instead “borrowed” the faked-up one above), you’ll have an opportunity to dine under that self-same moon this evening, if the clouds part. Here at the Herdic, we’re praying that the rain gods cry over Williamsport sometime soon, but we certainly hope they don’t do it tonight!

Our patio tables are finally dry after last week’s painting, and our House is packed to the rafters tonight—so dining al fresco is the only space we’ve got left this evening! Please call if you’d like a reservation! But the Blue Plate will be a delicious and unusual one: Pakistani-style autumn vegetable curry over basmati rice, finished with quick-pickled radish slaw. The Blue Plate, as always, is $15 at our House and $17 to go (but our number of to-go orders is always very limited). We’ll hope to see you out tonight! PS: Look for a Blue Plate price increase coming at the beginning of October. Oh inflation, we may not like you, but we have to bend to your whims!

Don’t miss our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus our Thursday night feature that pretends to be healthy, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled Landis Farm chicken breast, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and Liz’s parmesan ranch…plus Hannah will be mixing up plum manhattans at the bar!

You go about your days in this lovely September weather, and think you’re paying attention to the world around you…then, driving down Third St. for the third time in one day, you suddenly notice: the trees that were green last week (right? that’s our recollection) are suddenly suffused with deep red to one side and golden yellow to the other.

Say it ain’t so, Joe! The autumnal equinox is not quite upon us, and already the season is turning. Undoubtedly this lovely, warm, dry weather we’ve had these past few weeks has much to do with it, but here at the Herdic, we simply aren’t prepared for fall foliage yet. But try telling that to the lovely red maple outside our kitchen window, through which the afternoon light shines ever more golden as the days pass. The seasons change when they please, it seems. But in the spirit of goodbye, as we turn the page on summer this weekend, we offer a few transition-inspired features for Friday evening…

  • Concord grape gin fizz
  • Carola potato and leek soup finished with a chili-parmesan crisp
  • Roasted Carmen sweet peppers stuffed with sausage and ricotta, served over a bright baby arugula salad
  • Maryland-style lump crab cakes served with succotash, herbed potatoes and a lemon-chipotle aioli
  • Fresh peach cobbler with a scoop of housemade lemon-lavender ice cream

And three more items of note this week!

First, a quick boost for our second Lobster Boil of the season, coming up next Friday evening, September 27: we need to order these pound and a half Maine hardshell lobsters by next Wednesday, 9/25, so please call down to place your orders! The cost per lobster dinner is approximately $65, and we’ll be picking up from Kepler’s Seafood outside of Harrisburg on Friday morning, to boil them up for your plate on Friday night. (Lobster introductions are available upon request 😉

Second, don’t forget that the Herdic House will be closed this Saturday evening, September 21, for a private event. We’ll see you next Wednesday for a delicious autumn Blue Plate, though!
