Hauntingly succulent, this week at the Herdic House

This Week at the Herdic House

Wooohooo, the winds are howling round the eaves, the leaves are gusting through the streets and…it’s 80 degrees?! Who’da thunk that one of the main ghoulies at this year’s Halloween celebration would be climate change, huh? We’ll happily take this warm spell over some of the other ghastly happenings this week though (ugh, the election can’t come soon enough!), but, nonetheless, it’s a bit…eerie. And it’s making our pre-Halloween Blue Plate seem freakishly out of season: roasted delicata pumpkin stuffed with lamb, chickpeas, and raisins and served over minted yogurt sauce. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. We’ll hope to see you out tonight!

Don’t miss our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus our Thursday night feature that pretends to be healthy, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with ghastly grilled bloody beef tips, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and chipotle ranch…plus Hannah will be mixing up Zombies at the bar!

And no sooner is November’s First Friday upon us than the world transitions, lickety split, to a Thanksgiving mindset (unless you’re in the retail business, in which case you already have piles of Christmas colored m&ms on display). But the continuing warm weather has us more in a mind to savor the flavors of earlier fall, and our artist this First Friday, Debra Moffitt, is bringing a host of plein air paintings to our Lounge.

“I enjoy painting a variety of landscapes, from mountains to shore; my current focus is on the unique environmental and historic features of the major watersheds of the Northeast region, including the Susquehanna River. The interplay of light and shadow over forms captures my attention and imagination and my desire is to reveal the essence of a place for a moment in time, through personal vision and emotion,” Deb says of her work. And we must say we agree—Deb’s work is gloriously evocative of the region we call home. We’re very excited to be hosting an artist new to the Herdic art scene, and one recommended by our friend (and December artist) Holly Patton Shull. Stop down for her opening on Friday from 5-7 pm in the Lounge! And stick around for a bite to eat, if you dare, as we craft another delectable fall menu, after the week’s early frights are laid to rest, and all the ghouls have returned to their gravesites…

  • Roasted plum old-fashioned
  • Curried kabocha squash soup with toasted pumpkin seeds, cardamom yogurt and roasted beet
  • Mizuna salad with fresh radish, roasted sweet potato, sesame seeds and miso vinaigrette, finished with grilled shrimp
  • Pan-seared halibut over a lion’s mane mushroom risotto with crispy leeks, pea shoots and roasted tomato beurre blanc
  • Apple cider donuts with cinnamon-roasted apple and housemade maple walnut ice cream
