This Week at the Herdic House
Just in time for Easter, it seems that spring has finally arrived to stay. Last night, Brandon Park was full to the brim: ballplayers and spectators, parents and children, dogwalkers, pickup football players and wanderers of all types—including Liz’s kids and their cousins, sharpening sticks on the sidewalk and then marveling at how hot the friction made them. Science is all around us, indeed.
But today is April Fool’s Day, as well as the apex of this month’s Pink Moon, so it’s a day worthy of celebration! We contemplated a variety of foolish Blue Plates for this evening (meatloaf cupcakes, anyone?), but settled on something simpler and (we hope) more appealing: organic fettuccine from Pasta by Deb, tossed in a roasted tomato cream with local spinach, Landis Farm chicken and scallions. The Blue Plate, as always, is $18 at our House and $20 to go. And to celebrate the pink moon tonight, Sam and Liz are baking up some local strawberry tartlets to serve with housemade lemon curd ice cream…
Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving a twist on our latest Thursday night feature: a classic Herdic tenderloin tip sandwich, with caramelized onions, gruyere and horseradish dill mayonnaise, served open-faced, with Hunter’s tasty sweet potato chips and a pickle…
Next up this week, we’ll have the Herdic’s first First Friday artists of 2026: Simon Ward and Leslie Landon. We’re excited to be back in the FF loop, and particularly excited to host this duo making such delightfully different artwork for our area—Simon, who’s been fascinated by depicting race cars, fast cars and vintage automobiles since he was just a kid, teamed up with Leslie, whose spectacular pieces feature a glossy finish, and the resulting works capture the essence of the automobile. They’ll be on hand on Friday evening to discuss their technique, and we’ll also be serving our first tableside feature of the month, along with a delicious menu of fishes to celebrate the final Friday of Lent…
- Lump crab and sweet pepper bisque
- Herb-marinated poached shrimp served over lemon aioli with a crunchy veggie salad of asparagus, sweet pepper and cucumber
- Miso-grilled halibut over baby pac choi, grilled radish and sticky rice, finished with sesame crisp
- Bananas Foster, prepared at your table, and served over housemade vanilla ice cream
And finally, for this week, the Herdic House is doing a rare turn at being open on Sunday—for Easter Sunday, of course! If you’re looking for a spot to celebrate Easter, look no further than our House—we’ll be open and serving dinner on Easter from 11:30 am-2:00 pm, and we still have tables available. As we usually do, we’ll be serving a limited regular dining menu, as well as some classic Easter features: asparagus soup with lump crabmeat, roasted ham from Misty Mountain Farm, grilled rack of lamb with housemade mint jelly, and, of course, chocolate peanut butter torte, for all those folks who gave up sweets for Lent. Call down to book a table!
Plus some outtakes from Easter Week at Liz’s house, where everybody’s off school and your correspondent has been helping construct a April Fool’s prank for our Baltimore cousins, while penning this extensive email blast (aka, please forgive any errors!) The twin designed some perfectly twinny Easter drawings, and all five Miele-Shaw-Wood-Sands kids dyed 4 dozen total Easter eggs from Good Harvest Farm. Egg salad, anyone?
P.S. Please note, in the sidebar, that we’ve postponed our annual Shad Smoke by one week this year, so that we can focus on a memorial we’ll be hosting that weekend at the Herd, and Liz can make it to her 25th college reunion at least briefly…the Shad Smoke boys are looking forward to smoking you out on May 29 this year!
