This Week at the Herdic House

It may not bear a reminder, but just in case, once again our Blue Plate Special falls on a Thursday evening this week—tomorrow, to be precise. And the Blue Plate will be a hearty and delicious one: sweet pepper and Misty Mountain sausage lasagne, with fresh mozzarella and creamy tomato sauce. The Blue Plate, as always, is $18 at our House and $20 to go, and you can reach us at 570-322-0165 to book a table! Plus, we’ll have a final batch of sweet corn soup with crispy prosciutto and sungold tomato salsa before the season ends, and some fried green tomatoes to boot. Even tomorrow, space is limited, so please call down to book a table!

And keeping the reminders coming: our Blue Plates will be offered on Thursdays, 9/17, 9/24 and 10/8 instead of the usual Wednesdays, and, on the week of 9/28, there will be no Blue Plate at all! We’re sorry for all the disruptions to our regularly scheduled programming—as this email’s title asserts, we are “in the weeds” right now…delightfully busy, with a full house, and still trying to fit everything in. Thanks for bearing with us during what has become known as “bus tour season”, while the leaves are starting to fall. We’ll be back to normal soon, we think…

These weekly emails have been curtailed indeed by the arrival of bus tour, homecoming and autumn party season. Once again this week, we have no Friday evening menu to woo you with…because we’ve already got a busy Friday ahead of us, and we’re loathe to pin ourselves to a set of features we may not have the ingredients for by the time Friday arrives! But we’ll bring some excellent features next Friday, we promise, as we pen the first menu of autumn…and make the most of the final flowers of summer. For this week, know that we’ll be cooking up the best ingredients we can get our hands on, all week long, and that we’d love to see everyone’s smiling faces coming through our doors! But we’ll also encourage you to check out two exciting things to do right now in central PA…

First, this lovely weather in the 70s is perfect for woods-wandering, as Liz and the kids can attest. They were out hiking up the Raven’s Horn on the Golden Eagle Trail this past Sunday, and the view (pictured below) wasn’t the only treasure they came across. It’s truly amazing what you can find “in the weeds” this time of year—the kids hunted down golden chanterelles, cinnabar chanterelles and black trumpets, as well as dozens of toads and frogs and one precious red eft salamander, above top (please note that all animals were catch and release only, but we definitely ate the chanterelles).

The second exciting Williamsport activity this week is happening just down the street from us this Saturday, when our friends at the Bullfrog Brewery are celebrating their 30th anniversary in business, with a huge offering of local music both inside and outside in their parking lot, featuring great bands and, of course, the Bullfrog’s dangerously quaffable beer. If you, like many of us restaurant folk, enjoy a little dancing, you should make your way to the ‘Frog anytime on Saturday after noon…and we’ll definitely see you in the beer tent after hours on Saturday evening.

Whatever your lovely late summer week holds, enjoy the most out of our gorgeous September weather—and stop in to visit us at the Herdic House for what may be the final fix of our street corn salad before the chill evenings put an end to tomatoes and corn for 2026…
