This Week at the Herdic House
Such a lovely week of October weather as we only get this time of year, if we’re lucky, and, with the exception of an absolute downpour tomorrow, the crisp air and golden sunshine appear likely to linger most of the weekend too. Consequently, we’ve got a Blue Plate in mind for the evening that’s a match for a Wilpo autumn—a little comforting, a little Italian and a lot hearty: roasted vegetable and Misty Mountain sausage lasagne with a creamy tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go, like always—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. And for dessert, we’ll have some toasted pumpkin crumb cake with maple walnut ice cream…
Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving our Thursday night feature that feigns healthiness, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled garlicky tenderloin tips, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Plus, Hannah will be mixing up spooky strong cider cocktails at the bar…
Needless to say, there’s a lot of excitement around the Herdic House this week. Halloween approacheth, and, with it, parties of all varieties, trick or treating galore, and general merriment of all wicked types. In other words, it’s our type of holiday, not as a restaurant perhaps (we’re expecting a generally light crowd on Friday evening, as always) but as a group of industry folks and families who delight in nothing more than costume, fanfare and the more-than-occasional late night.
Up at Liz’s house, the race is on: with trick or treating downtown this evening and on Friday all over Williamsport and “character day” at school on Friday too, the kids are in a tizzy trying to decide on not one, but as many as three costumes…and Liz, as she so often does, is wishing she’d started worrying about this earlier. Liz and the kids accidentally crashed Wegmans’ trick or treat night last evening—in search of nothing more than bananas and bread and junk food, they wound up with candy bags too, all while dressed up as nothing more than three schoolchildren and one embarrassed mom.
In other news, Liz is making her second attempt today to retrieve 50 ducks from Country Homestead Farm (yesterday’s resulted in the restaurant van spending the night at a Ford dealership in Lewisburg, and a rescue effort by our favorite Bob Esposito, about whom we may never say enough lovely things, no matter how often we publicly thank him for being a crankily wonderful human). Once those ducks actually reach the Herdic House, it’s likely that they’ll make an appearance on our Friday evening menu (and on our dining menus moving forward, naturally), so prepare yourselves, folks, for the autumn duck onslaught!
But on Friday and Saturday, while much of the city spins with frantic All Hallow’s Eve merriment, the Herdic will be doing its usual delicious dinner thing, with a wee bit of spookiness thrown in. We haven’t decided on any specific features for the weekend, but we’re sure the menu will include the aforementioned duck, some squashes, parsnips, leeks—because, after all, that’s what this late harvest season is all about. We’ll hope to see you at our place this weekend!
But whatever you do during this spooky and spirited wrap up to October, have an eerily good time…and we’d be remiss if we didn’t remind you (as Daisy and Peter Jr., above, are smilingly advocating) that this coming Tuesday, November 4, will be Election Day in Williamsport and across PA. Our very own Liz is on the ballot, sure, but we’re fortunate to have a bunch of excellent city council candidates running this election—and we believe that supporting new talent and getting new faces into city leadership is more important than voting for the same old candidates. But whoever you vote for, please don’t forget to vote on Tuesday!! P.S.
