This Week at the Herdic House
While we’re delighted that spring seems to have finally settled into a groove, we’ll confess that, with the (EEK!) rapid approach of May, we’d hoped that groove might lean more toward 70 degrees and sunny. But 60 degrees and rainy with no frosts in the forecast will suit us just fine, thank you. And it does give us the opportunity to cook up one of Liz’s earliest favorite meals for tonight’s Blue Plate: Misty Mountain Farm ham loaf, drizzled with brown sugar and dijon glaze and served over mac and cheese. Liz celebrated yet another birthday yesterday, and ham loaf was the meal she requested for the very first birthday for which anyone thought to ask her—over 40 years ago now. Since it also happens to be perfectly suited to today’s weather, we’ll bring it back around for a birthday dinner again…
The Blue Plate, as always, is $18 at our House and $20 to go. You can reach us at 570-322-0165 to book a table! Add in an appetizer of a grilled asparagus salad with hardboiled farm egg, arugula and prosciutto, drizzled with a parmesan vinaigrette, and you’ve got a great rainy day dinner indeed…
Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving up tenderloin tip sandwiches once again, with caramelized onion, gruyere and horseradish mayo, with our new house favorite starch: the spiced up shoestring potatoes we’ve just put on our appetizer list…
For the first outdoor First Friday of the season, we’re excited to be hosting the talented Linda Borish from Eagles Mere for the very first time, with a show that couldn’t be more apropos for the season: fabulous and bright paintings of spring and summer flowers. Linda’s show will be hanging starting on Wednesday evening this week, but her opening will take place on May 15, when she returns from a lengthy trip to Italy with some new inspiration. However, that doesn’t mean that we won’t be pulling out the stops for an awesome First Friday menu this Friday, complete with ample local products and spring flowers in the mix. So don’t forget to swing down our way when there’s a break in the action downtown!
- Fresh lilac margaritas
- Spring vegetable soup drizzled with a basil and spring herb pesto
- Poached farm egg over local asparagus, drizzled with chive hollandaise and viola petals
- Classic salade niçoise, with seared albacore tuna from Wild for Salmon, local greens, marinated potatoes, fresh tomatoes, kalamata olives. boiled farm egg and blanched asparagus
- Liz’s favorite rhubarb upside down cake, served with housemade ice cream and peony-macerated strawberries
Then on Saturday, we’ll have some Southern specials on tap for the running of the Kentucky Derby, complete with deviled eggs, local tomato pie and chocolate pecan tart. This is good ol’ Southern food, folks, and not to be missed!
