This Week at the Herdic House
As we gear up to celebrate America’s 250th birthday this weekend (we’d say she’s one old gal, but, of course, 250 years is somewhat young and inexperienced by civilization standards), we’re starting with a little Tex-Mex this evening for the Blue Plate—highlighting some of the awesome culinary and human connections in our melting pot that have helped American food level up so remarkably these past few decades…
…and the Blue Plate will be: Misty Mountain Farm chorizo and sweet potato enchiladas, with green tomato salsa verde, red beans and lime slaw. The Blue Plate, as always, is $18 at our House and $20 to go, and you can reach us at 570-322-0165 to book a table! We’ll also have a creamy tomato soup with roasted tomato and corn salsa, and some crispy calamari with lemon aioli and roasted peppers as an appetizer…and we should mention that our street corn stack salad is back on the menu starting tonight!
Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’re taking a cue from the heat and serving a Herdic Pittsburgh salad for dinner, complete with Beech Grove Farm greens, parmesan ranch, crispy fries and grilled beef tenderloin…
And this Friday, as is our wont in the lead up to the Fourth of July, we’ll be hosting a celebration of the founding of the United States—complete with a reading of the Declaration of Independence, a sorta patriotic sing-a-long, a display of local quiltcraft and a menu of classic Americana.
The reading and sing-a-long will be hosted by none other than our favorite local lawyer, service dog fosterer and chamber choir member Fred Holland—and will begin about 7 pm, though the jury is out on whether it will be conducted inside or outside, depending on exactly how hot this heat dome proves to be. The quiltcraft will be on display in the Herdic lounge throughout the month of July (including the detail above, from a quilt by Sgt. Kolleen Dickerson), curated by quilter Margie Shaw, with an opening next Friday, July 11. And the menu…well, we’re looking forward to some truly quintessential American dishes, though we’ll miss our usual cherry pie this year, thanks to all the unseasonable warmth and frosts this spring—ah, the wonders of climate change…
- New England clam chowder with Misty Mountain bacon and local sweet corn
- Maryland-style lump crab cake with lemon aioli and a crisp veggie salad
- Grilled NY Strip steak from Misty Mountain Farm served with local sweet corn and sliced fresh tomatoes, finished with chili butter
- Fresh blueberry pie, served with a scoop of housemade vanilla ice cream
And don’t forget, that, as usual, the Herdic will be closed this Saturday, July 4, so that our staff can celebrate with their friends and families. We’ll see you after the big, all-American birthday party, y’all!
