This Week at the Herdic House

Nearly three inches of rain and seven days later, and here it is another Wednesday, and a glorious one at that! After the past week’s multiple deluges, the bright sun and crisp air feel like an absolute benediction, and the plants, of course, are glorying in the abundant sunshine. Here’s hoping we’ll glimpse the sun again sometime later this week! Tonight’s Blue Plate will be Mexican-style stuffed peppers, with Misty Mountain Farm lamb, savory veggies and queso fresco, served over black beans with salsa casera. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go, like always—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. We’ll hope to see you out tonight! And our soup this evening will be a Tuscan chicken soup with kale and white beans… Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving our Thursday night feature that pretends to be healthy, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled spicy shrimp, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Plus, Hannah will be shaking up spiked lilac lemonade at the bar… It’s May, it’s May, the crazy month of May! This is the week when our little Herdic world explodes with activity, and we’ll spend the next several weeks helping folks celebrate college and high school graduations, mothers, birthdays, babies, weddings and, of course, shad (did you make your reservation for the Shad Smoke yet?). The madness starts this weekend, with Lycoming College’s graduation on Saturday, followed by our completely booked Mother’s Day dinner service on Sunday, but next week promises to be even more exciting as both Bucknell and Penn College graduate their seniors.

Given the packed week we have ahead, we won’t be teasing a featured menu for Friday night, but we do know we’ll be making some delicious dishes with the first-of-the-season asparagus and rhubarb we have in house. And we’ll have the striking artwork of Tara Silva on display in the lounge all month long (see above), as well as some unique, beautiful (and affordable!) paint drip jewelry by Ms. Silva for those looking for a Mother’s Day gift.

And don’t forget to pick up your copy of Earthly Materials, by our favorite author (and relative) Cutter Wood of course! The inimitable Mr.Wood would be thrilled and puzzled to see a surge in orders from Central PA. This link will take you to Otto Bookstore’s website, if you prefer the online approach, but it’s much more sociable to stop on down to visit the lovely folks at Otto and pick up a copy in person. They’ll also be hosting a book signing event with Cutter on June 6, possibly paired with an Author Dinner here at the humble Herdic House. And check out last week’s adventure, as we put together a cake based on the Bristol Stool Chart for Cutter’s book release party in Baltimore—particularly the chocolate smears around Anaïs’s broad grin, from eating our early attempts at stool imitation…
