Oh, the weather outside is frightful, this week at the Herdic House

This Week at the Herdic House

Apparently your correspondent got a little excited about our features for last Wednesday, and accidentally confused a large swath of our Blue Plate crowd. So this week, we’ll nix the flowery description in favor of clear and concise fact: tonight’s Blue Plate will be a Misty Mountain sausage and roasted sweet pepper lasagne, with housemade ricotta and a tomato cream. As for that Blue Plate, it’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go, like always—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. We’ll hope to see you out tonight! P.S. Tonight’s soup will be Marcia’s classic recipe: Court and Willow carrot soup, made with Fossil Spring Farm’s awesomely sweet winter carrots… Don’t miss our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus our Thursday night feature that pretends to be healthy, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled tenderloin tips, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Hannah will be brewing up hot toddies at the bar too! As part of our mission to truly get our winter on while it lasts around here, a good chunk of our Herdic crew headed up to Eagles Mere this weekend to experience that quintessential winter activity (that’s seldom available any longer—thanks, climate change!): the Eagles Mere Toboggan Slide. Despite the throngs of people, we managed to sneak in a few runs down the hillside, as well as an icy trek around and then across the frozen lake, followed by cocktails fireside. The twins are proud to say that they each rode in the front of a toboggan, and Daisy is proud to say that she decided to take a pass on tobogganing at all…hence why she’s not pictured. We’re hoping to get her down the hill next time we’re up.

It doesn’t get much better than the Toboggan Slide in PA in the wintertime, though, and we’d encourage you to give it a go over the next few weeks, if you haven’t yet. It seems as though the winter weather will be coming on strong this week and next (but hopefully staying well clear of Valentine’s celebrations), and the whole region looks like it’ll be a veritable winter wonderland—so we might’s well make the best of some glorious snow!

But, here at the Herdic, not much makes us feel warmer and cozier than some good old Italian food, so we’ll be focusing on that this Friday, as we dig out from under Thursday’s purported snowfall…as for Saturday, however, please be aware that we have limited reservations still available! And see our note about Valentine’s Day below our shameless promotion of Friday night’s menu…

  • Blood orange negroni
  • Classic Italian minestre, with white beans, kale and tomato
  • Crispy calamari with fried hot peppers, lemon aioli and bitter arugula
  • Misty Mountain Farm bone-in pork chop (one of our favorite delicacies around here—this dish is a belated birthday present for Dante), rubbed with rosemary, grilled, then roasted over sweet peppers, and served with creamy polenta and wilted spinach, with a dijon cream for dipping
  • Deconstructed cannoli, with crispy pastry layered with almond-scented ricotta mousse and shaved Callebaut chocolate

P.S. We’re just about out of tables on Valentine’s Day proper next week (that’s Friday, February 14), but we’ll be serving Valentine’s features all week long (plus a Blue Plate Special on Wednesday, of course), and we still have several tables available on Saturday, February 15 and wide open availability on Thursday, February 13 (for now!) Hurry up and call down for a table with your sweet thing…
