This Week at the Herdic House

Today has a bit of a morning-after feel to it, as we return to a House still decked out in brothel-esque scarlet (how delighted were we to learn that red is the color for a 40th anniversary?) and littered with undrunk bottles of champagne, and begin to reconstruct a semblance of our normal dining experience. But the season will indeed go on, beginning with a comforting and delicious Blue Plate perfect for a restaurant that’s still slightly hungover: Moroccan style beef stew with chickpeas, couscous and a preserved lemon gremolata. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. We’ll hope to see you out tonight!

Don’t miss our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus our Thursday night feature that pretends to be healthy, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled strip steak tagliata, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Hannah will be mixing up simple and delicious side cars at the bar—which was, incidentally, Liz’s eye-opening introduction to the world of cocktails, three decades ago, at the tender age of 16…
Who says grand old ladies can’t party down? Certainly not the grand old ladies of the Herdic, who boogied their way through the night on Saturday, to the skilled strains of Fats Walter and the Susquehanna Boom Rats. And we weren’t the only ones getting down—the whole party was right there with us, 100-odd people (and odd people indeed), drinking and dancing with the best of them. Thanks to all the wonderful friends we had the pleasure of partying with on Saturday evening. Here’s one final glass of champagne raised to toast 40 more years of parties with you all. And we promise to post photos just as soon as we get them in hand from the evening’s two talented photographers, Rick Mason and Emily Kane, but for now you’ll have to settle for a pic of the pre-party, when the kids were called in to help red the old place up…

…but the world and the season keep moving on, and this week brings us yet another wonderful celebration, for Victorian Christmas. Over at the Herdic Inn, Leslie has been buried for weeks in Christmas decor and detritus—and we think she’ll come out on top in the end. But you’ll have to buy a ticket for the house tours on Saturday to find out!

Here at the Herdic, our annual Victorian Christmas Tea has been booked for several weeks now, but we still have limited tables available for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights—please call to make a reservation! We’ll be serving up some semi-classic Victorian fare both evenings, but we won’t be pinned to a specific menu just yet. There will be delicious butternut squash soup and a savory rack of lamb, and the Herdic classic Chicken Champagne is officially back on the menu for the holiday season…but that’s all we can say for sure, just yet. We’re looking forward to another great weekend, no matter the fare!

One last thing: a heads up for everyone out there, as we head into the first of the season’s holidays: the Herdic House, as always, will be closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 28…
