This Week at the Herdic House

As the nightshades positively flood in, it’s time around the Herd to accustom ourselves to a more mediterranean diet—hence this week’s Blue Plate, which actually hails all the way from North Africa: eggplant stuffed with lamb and roasted cherry tomatoes, served over cous-cous with an herbed yogurt sauce. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go, like always—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. Then heading north to Germany, we present Liz’s grandmother Irene’s recipe for peach kuchen as tonight’s dessert: fresh peaches baked in a crumb crust with cream and cinnamon…

Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving our Thursday night feature that feigns healthiness, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with chimichurri tenderloin tips, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Plus, Hannah will have plum and bourbon smashes at the bar…
Somehow we can’t get enough of pointing out what a lovely, delicious time of year this is, and this year seems to be even lovelier than most! If we set aside the hazy outlook thanks to distant wildfires, the temperatures have been delightful and the humidity moderate—a glorious August full of yielding tomatoes, crisp peppers, juicy peaches and the sweetest of all sweet corn: what could be better?

So this week as we’re inundated with delectable produce, we’re taking a mediterranean approach to Friday’s menu: simple, elegant, light, yet flavorful. It may not be health food, but it’s certainly the closest we get around these parts. So take a Friday hike or a leisurely bike ride, and then come join us for some tasty features that might make you feel good about…everything: summer, your hot bod, our Pennsylvania wilds…and maybe even the world in general. Wouldn’t that be nice, for a change?

  • Plum-infused negronis with marigold petals
  • Liz’s chilled, garlicky gazpacho finished with three grilled shrimp and a spritz of capers
  • Warm salad of grilled squid, fennel, olives and roasted peppers, with parsley and olive oil
  • Seared monkfish with a caper and sungold tomato ragout, served over crispy potatoes anna
  • Fresh peaches with creme anglaise

P.S. By request, we have a shameless plug in this week’s email, for a cool event happening in our region’s hinterlands—one which would be an excellent follow-up to our nearly sold out Victorian Tea on August 16—the Eagles Mere Museum is hosting a cottage tours of ten early Eagles Mere cottages from 1-4 pm on August 17. If you’ve never been, Eagles Mere has a truly glorious stash of Victorian and turn-of-the-century cottages, set idyllically around a forested lake—and this is an excellent opportunity to get a peak inside some of these beautiful old places. For more information, email emmuseuminfo@gmail.com. Tickets are $35…
