Rain, rain, come again, this week at the Herdic House

This Week at the Herdic House

Apologies on another late epistle from your correspondent! It’s been a long two weeks with summer camp over and school not yet begun, and while it’s delightful to get to see so much of the kids, it can really slow a girl down getting out an email blast. So we’ll keep it short and sweet this afternoon, in the interests of getting this week’s menus out there.

But first, a quick thank you to Mother Nature for sending us today’s much needed rain! Though it feels indeed like a harbinger of autumn (much like the slanting alpenglow in the photo of Linden kayaking above, in fairer weather), our gardens are already looking restored, if a little overgrown. And our growers will be grateful for the dousing indeed: we were getting dire warnings about lettuces, and we’re hoping this deluge will be the wet the greens need to keep on coming.

There’s no lettuce in this evening’s Blue Plate, but the dry weather has had the opposite effect on peppers, so we’ve decided to feature an oft-requested Blue: a chili relleno, stuffed with Misty Mountain chorizo, 2 cheeses and garlic, and served in a salsa guajillo over rice and black beans. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go, like always—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. For those looking for lighter fare, we’ll be featuring a caprese salad this evening, and Liz is working on a batch of summer vegetable soup with cilantro pesto to counteract today’s cool vibes…

Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving our Thursday night feature that feigns healthiness, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled lemony shrimp, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Plus, Andrew will have vodka-laced watermelon agua fresca at the bar at the bar…
And just like that, we’re sold out of lobsters (and nearly out of tables!) for Friday night’s Lobster Boil. Wow, what a response—Wilpo really loves its crustaceans! And this settles it: Liz will be chained to our little range in the basement, boiling lobsters, dismembering lobsters, plating lobsters, for the entirety of Friday evening. If you see her floating around on Friday night, we recommend NOT going in for a hug (ick, smelly!). If you’re thinking of stopping in for dinner on Friday night, we mostly have tables available at 7:30 and after—but please give a call to book a seat!

P.S. And remember: due to a large party in our main dining room next Wednesday, we’ll be postponing next week’s Blue Plate to Thursday—and canceling our happy hours for the evening….
