This Week at the Herdic House
To all those out there who weren’t excited by yesterday’s snow day, please know that there were at least three small children (at Liz’s house, naturally) who thought it was the best thing that ever happened to them. What an early Christmas present to actually get snow in December! And it has, of course, put us in mind of a Blue Plate classic to serve this evening (one which Liz’s kids would have vastly preferred to the meal she fed them last night): it’s time again for Landis Farm chicken and biscuits, over mashed potatoes. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go, like always—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. And for dessert, we’ll be serving our classic apple bread pudding, by request as the holidays approach…
Plus, we’ll give you a heads up about a change of routine coming in two weeks’ time: on December 18, our Blue Plate Special is moving from Wednesday to Thursday evening one last time in 2025 (and for the final Blue Plate of 2025, come to think of it, since we won’t be serving a Blue Plate on Christmas or New Year’s Eve). We have a handful of larger groups booked on December 17, and we’ll have more room for our usual Blue Plate crowd on Thursday, December 18!
Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving our Thursday night feature that feigns healthiness, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with a confit duck leg from Country Acres Homestead, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch.
Which brings us to the topic of the rest of the week here at the Herdic, and the beginning of our true Christmas season here…which is to say: lunches!! That’s right—beginning on Thursday morning at 11:30 am, the Herd will be open for lunch Thursday to Saturday until Christmas. Nine fleeting lunches to sip Christmas champagne by our 12 foot real Christmas tree and draw out the brief daylight hours with warm thoughts and good company.
But we may not need to sing the praises of lunch at the Herdic, because it seems like many of you already know—this Thursday is shaping up to be a real door buster of an opening lunch day, and we’re packed to the rafters most days already. If you haven’t yet made a lunch reservation, we can offer just one tip: Saturdays still have some room! But please call to make a reservation…
And our December nights aren’t necessarily looking much slower than our days, but we’ve got tables left most evenings. This Friday, we’ve even got a few features to let you know about, as we really get into holiday mode with some celebration-worthy dishes, including Liz’s latest Yule log recipe, which is not only tasty, but also gluten-free…
- Prince Edward Island mussels steamed with herbs, garlic, butter and cream, and served with rouille-slathered toast
- Lump crab cakes served with caper-harissa aioli and bright herb coulis, over a roasted potato and Brussels salad
- Chocolate-raspberry buche de Noël, served with a meringue mushroom and toasted pistachio “soil”
