This Week at the Herdic House
The upside of the past two record-heat days is that area pools are warm enough for swimming just in time for Memorial Day. The downside, unfortunately, is that the rain and chill in the forecast will make that a moot point. But we get one more day of lovely summer weather before the worm turns! And for the Blue Plate, we’ve chosen a staff favorite—unrelated to the weather, but heavily related to the fact that Andrew in our kitchen will be celebrating his birthday on Wednesday and his seven-year anniversary in our kitchen on Saturday, and he’s put in a personal request.
But if Andrew loves it, why wouldn’t you? Join us tonight for Landis Farm chicken gravy and biscuits with mashed potatoes and sauteed spring greens. Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving sockeye salmon-cake sandwiches, with lemon chipotle aioli, capers and quickled cucumbers, and a side of our spiced up shoestring potatoes…
The forecast for Memorial Day weekend is truly dire this year, but we’ll do our best to put a holiday spin on things to kick the weekend off on Friday evening, with a menu by Hunter Duffield in the kitchen (Liz is running up to Providence to spend at evening at Campus Dance for her 25th college reunion):
- Creamy lump crab bisque with slivered asparagus and tarragon
- Chili butter roasted Standish oysters finished with parmesan and scallion strands
- Pan-seared halibut served over crispy potatoes anna and wilted spinach in a wild leek and roasted saladette tomato beurre blanc, finished with leek-chili crisp
- Fresh local strawberries and lavender creme anglaise
The boomerang weather patterns of this spring didn’t stop our tree peonies from blooming even a little bit early this year (see our picture above). They bloom annually right around Marcia’s birthday—a helpful reminder to reflect on those that are dear to us, though they may no longer be near. Marcia would have turned 72 this past Monday, and we’ve been thinking of her often this week. We’ll be thinking about her as we gather to celebrate another loss on the Elion side of the family this Saturday. So this is a reminder that we’ll be closed this Saturday, May 23, to host a memorial for our friend Jude Elion: musician, educator, preserver of Honda Civics and much-missed member of the Herdic family. The event will take place from 2-5 pm, and all friends of Jude are welcome.
