This Week at the Herdic House
There’s nothing romantic about today’s Blue Plate…but lots that’s delicious! As the slow drip of melting snow fills gardens and gutters with puddles, we’re yearning for something with a touch of heat..that’s still a bit comforting to the system. So the Blue tonight will be Landis Farm chicken and spinach enchiladas, served over black beans and rice and finished with salsa verde and sour cream. The Blue Plate, as always, is $18 at our House and $20 to go. Sticking with our slightly spicy theme, we’ll have a shrimp masala bisque by the cup tonight, as well…and an orange-strawberry swirl cheesecake with nothing spicy about it. We’ll hope to see you out tonight!
Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving our Thursday night feature that feigns healthiness, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled delmonico tagliata, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Hannah’s cocktail feature will be a sour cherry cosmopolitan…
Well, we’ve survived a weekend of lovers here at the Herdic, and lived (and loved) to tell the tale. Our Valentine meals even received several rave reviews, and one frank testimonial as to their romantic side effects (guess all those aphrodisiacs must not be old wives’ tales after all). And lo and behold, like some curious blessing from the gods of love, Valentine’s weekend coincided with the Great Thaw, turning our frozen world into a dripping, seeping, damp yet delightful mess that seems (fingers crossed) to be a harbinger of spring.
What other indicators of spring have you spotted? The birds have clearly let loose with an arsenal of chirping, and Liz’s cat Tux is once again willing to leave the house to lie in wait for them…but we’re still waiting for the surest sign of spring, when men driving around town roll down their car windows to catcall women out walking. Outmoded (and offensive) or not, it always does our hearts good to see people attempting connection…and as we get older and no wiser here at the Herdic, there’s something a bit reassuring in the occasional bit of street harassment.
Speaking of street activity, we’ve spent the past few days checking out pictures and video as a large swath of the world celebrates Mardi Gras, or Carnevale, or Carnival, or some iteration of this festive event…and we’re a bit jealous. We had to miss out on our usual Mardi Gras festivities here at the Herd last weekend, but we’ve decided it’s never too late for a bit of Cajun food. So this Friday, we’re going to feature a few of our favorite Cajun and Creole items, even though we know that Lent will have already begun…
- Landis chicken and Misty Mountain sausage gumbo
- Fried oysters with cajun remoulade
- Seared snapper with creole meuniere, wilted spinach and sweet corn maque choux
- Praline sundae with housemade rum and pecan ice cream, crumbled praline and caramel
