This Week at the Herdic House
Here it is Wednesday all over again, and we’re back in the Blue Plate swing of things here at the Herd. Join us this evening for Landis chicken and fall vegetable enchiladas, served over black beans and rice with Sam’s salsa guajillo. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go, like always—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. And for dessert, Liz will be cooking up her first batch of apple cider donuts this fall, served with housemade paw-paw ice cream, naturally…
Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving our Thursday night feature that feigns healthiness, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled harissa-marinated tenderloin tips, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Plus, Hannah will be mixing up plum manhattans at the bar…
Well, the trees did a bit of dithering during the drought in August and early September, but they’ve held off until the usual time to change in earnest—and what a delight this slow-burn autumn has been! But now is the time, if you’re hoping to seize a moment to yourself among the brilliant, falling leaves and the scent of earth, fading fern and leaf mold, to get out into the fields and woods and celebrate this fleeting moment, this passage from a season of abundance and activity to one of rest and restoration.
It’s a fitting time for the Oktoberfest meal we’ll be hosting this coming Friday, October 24 (schnitzel, anyone?), and also the moment to bring out the pumpkins, the cornstalks and the creepy-crawlies that festoon every corner this time of year. Keep an eye out for our slightly scarier accoutrements to make an appearance this weekend (nudge, nudge, Hannah and Dante!)
But we’re waiting to put on our All Hallow’s Eve finery until after this coming Friday evening, because we will be CLOSED for regular dining on Friday, October 17. A few weeks ago we lost a dear friend and a patron of the Herdic House, a man who we’ve known for our entire 41 years in business—we’ll be celebrating his life on Friday evening, and then we’ll reopen Saturday night, October 18, for regular dining. However, we’re already pretty well-booked up for Saturday evening, so please call if you’d like to book a table! We postponed our Gatsby-versary party until Saturday, November 15 in order to host this Friday’s memorial event. But that means that you can still grab tickets for an excellent party, replete with champagne, gilded hors d’oeuvres of all types, and delicious dancing to the strains of Fats Walter and the Susquehanna Boom Rats, on November 15 at 7:00 pm! Tickets are $75 and can be reserved via email (hit us up at herdichouse@gmail.com) or phone at 570.322.0165. Beautiful fools, indeed…
P.P.S. Don’t forget to check out the beautiful works of Beth England in the Lounge this month—and pick up a few notecards or prints while you’re here. Works and prints will be on sale throughout the month of October!
