This Week at the Herdic House
Purely delicious for this week’s Blue Plate, folks: a Spanish chicken pie, with Landis Farm chicken, chorizo, olives and cherry tomatoes. It’s $15 at the House and $17 to go…
And tomorrow, our Happy Hours continue! Join us from 5-7 pm on Thursday evenings at the bar for some cocktail specials—$2 off wines by the glass, $1 off beers by the bottle and a rotating $9 craft cocktail, plus we’ll be making classic Pittsburgh-style salads, with housemade ranch dressing, crisp seasonal veggies, Yukon Gold fries. grated cheddar and grilled tenderloin tips… And this week’s cocktail will be a watermelon cosmo with pureed watermelon, Tito’s vodka, lime and agave…
With each passing year, we fall more and more in love with that late summer phenomenon in central PA—the moment when the whole world seems to turn golden, almost as if someone has poured wildflower honey over it. And much like a honey-covered landscape, everything seems slower and sweeter under that light. An evening swim in the alpenglow with the twins and Daisy plus Hannah and Andrew and Divia from the Herd seems to stretch the length of a gilded childhood, and the fields of goldenrod on the drive out and back wave like old friends.
Sure, we haven’t seen a hint of the sun in three days (not that we’re complaining about a little rain after two months of drought), but somehow even that doesn’t dull the amber hues of early autumn, from the squash vines slowly yellowing in the backyard to the profusion of black-eyed susans spreading through the garden at the Inn to the leaves beginning ever so slowly to turn crisp and delicately golden-brown.
Couple that with the Harvest Moon shining down on us this weekend, and there’s no better occasion to celebrate the season’s colors and the bounty of the harvest as we curve imperceptibly and inexorably into autumn. Come out to enjoy the alpenglow on the Herdic patio this Friday evening, then stay for a menu of freshly harvested delights. And perhaps, if we enjoy a little too much amber nectar from the bar, we can even croon a little bit of that old Laurel and Hardy tune… “Oh shine on, shine on Harvest Moon, up in the sky…”

And did we mention that Elli Groninger’s artwork is truly a symphony of shape and color this year? And that it’s going fast…
