This Week at the Herdic House

As this warm spell continues, it’s beginning to feel like it might actually be spring in the making hereabouts, and the groundhog be damned. So we’re getting outside of our wintry, comfort food zone tonight and making an interesting Blue Plate that we think will tickle your tastebuds, as well as honor the esteemed Dr. Seuss and his madcap creativity—it’s our iteration of Beezle-Nut Stew (from Horton Hears a Who): Moroccan-spiced lamb meatballs stewed with chickpeas, tomatoes, preserved lemon and olives, served over white rice, finished with a pine-nut gremolata. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go, like always—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. We’ll hope to see you out tonight! And we should mention that our soup tonight is a kitchen favorite: Landis Farm chicken corn chowder, with Tebbs’ sweet corn… We’d be remiss if we didn’t encourage you to take a pass on our Happy Hours tomorrow evening to stop by the event below, and provide your input. Liz will be working the line tomorrow night, so she can’t attend—but she’s hoping a bunch of folks will go and tell everyone she sent them!

But afterward, consider stopping by our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus our Thursday night feature that pretends to be healthy, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled tenderloin tips, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Plus, Hannah will be mixing up even more black manhattans at the bar—the current Herdic favorite cocktail… Eek! March is upon us already, and with it, Women’s History Month and an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable women we know who are helping shape Williamsport’s culinary future. As we may have mentioned a time or two over the past month, we’re kicking our guest chefs off with our own Samantha Gonzalez, who was  raised in Puebla, Mexico and a few years ago decided to bring her culinary skills north to Williamsport, where the Herdic House has been the fortunate beneficiary—whether it’s the tres leches cakes she somehow turns up with at every occasion, the delicious (and somehow slightly, well, more authentic) salsas she’s responsible for every time we need one, the pozole she brought us all to sample when she was working on her upcoming menu, or any of the myriad other items she somehow adds her unique touch to, we consider ourselves lucky indeed to have Sam in our kitchen. Not to mention that, man, she’s way too nice for the likes of us!

She’s so nice in fact that she’s agreed to spearhead another menu of Pueblan specialties for this First Friday, despite the hard work it was last year—and she’s come up with another slate of exciting recipes. (But she’s awfully camera-shy, so we’ve been forced to use the same photo we used last year.) Check her dishes out in the menu designed by our talented Hannah, below…

And we don’t want to miss a chance to mention our other upcoming guest chefs:

  • Alivia Tagliaferri with recipes of Rome on March 15
  • Marleni Feinstein with recipes of Singapore on March 28
  • and Kashfiah Fatema with recipes of Bangladesh and the Middle East on April 4

Keep an eye on our Facebook page for menus!

And another P.S. Thanks to everyone who made sure our soup SOLD OUT at last week’s Food Bank fundraiser—and in the process raised more than $1000 for a local charity. Next up: don’t forget that next week we’ll all have another opportunity to contribute to local charities, at Raise the Region…
