This Week at the Herdic House
linden likes blob toss and loves mom and dad loblob
There’s been a keyboard takeover here on the Herdic’s weekly email blast, as you can see. Linden played a very successful long con this morning and convinced his mama he had a stomach ache. Since returning home, he’s cleaned the floor, checked the batteries on his bubble gun and, most recently, started the email blast while no one was looking.
We’ll leave his comments for the record (to demonstrate to his teenage self that at one time he liked his parents), and move on to the meat of today’s email, literally. Tonight’s Blue Plate is a Herdic taco salad, with Misty Mountain Farm beef, black beans, pepper jack, tortilla crisps, salsa casera and lime crema, all over local baby greens. The Blue Plate, as always, is $18 at our House and $20 to go. But we’ll be serving more prosaic features otherwise: a lovely broccoli, cheddar and bacon soup and an arugula, soft boiled egg and asparagus salad. We’ll hope to see you out tonight!
Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving our Thursday night feature that feigns healthiness, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with a duck leg confit, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Hannah’s cocktail feature will be an aperol spritz, most beloved cocktail of our friend Bob Esposito…
But the true excitement in today’s email is the first in a series of menus for Women’s History Month, wherein we focus on a culinary history ofttimes created by women in home kitchens around the world. First up, we’ll be featuring several classic recipes from the Puebla region of Mexico, prepared by our chef Samantha Gonzalez from recipes created by the women in her family (and generously provided by her mother). Sam spends a lot of time following Liz’s recipes (or oral instructions, since Liz isn’t great with recipes), and we’re delighted to be following her techniques for once, including some that are less common in our more classically French and Italian cooking styles around here—including this week’s dessert, which combines a flan with a cake baked directly on top, for a delicious dish indeed. Who knew?
This Friday, we’ll feature a Mexican dinner menu by Chef Samantha Gonzalez; on March 14, we’ll feature Indian cuisine from Delhi with our friend Anjun Khan; and on March 20, we’ll feature Singaporean cuisine with our friend Marleni Feinstein. All menus will be prix fixe, either 3-4 courses (with likely some extra dishes available a la carte), and all purchases of our featured menu items will trigger a donation of a portion of the proceeds…
This year, because so many of our guest chefs over the years have at some point in their lives emigrated to the US, bringing their amazing culinary skills with them, we’ve decided to donate a portion of the sales from each of our women guest chefs’ menus in March to benefit Thrive, which has been working pretty heroically to assist recent immigrants to our community with legal services, and providing families of immigrants with basic needs during a difficult time. So come join us for some exciting fare that’s hard to find here in Wilpo, and support a great local nonprofit into the bargain!
- Mezcalita de Jamaica: mezcal margaritas with fresh lime, butterfly pea-hibiscus syrup and a hibiscus rim
- Crema de elote: sweet corn soup with queso fresco, lime and cilantro, finished with grilled shrimp
- Tlacoyos: masa and black bean fritters topped with tomato, crema and cilantro
- Chile en nogada: a poblano chile stuffed with Misty Mountain meats, fruits and nuts, served in a walnut crema with pomegranate seeds and parsley
- Choco flan: a “cake” made up of a chocolate cake and a flan layer, drizzled with its own caramel syrup and served with fresh berries
- Cost of prix fixe food menu (not including a cocktail) will be $65
P.S. If you live in the City of Williamsport, and are registered to vote (and we hope that you do and you are!), Liz is collecting signatures to put a slate of commissioners on the ballot in the May primary to draft a Home Rule charter for the City of Williamsport. She and Dante are both running, along with five other excellent candidates, and any registered voter in the city can sign the petition, regardless of political party. Please consider lending us your support in the form of your signature on our petition (and, later on, with your vote)—the petition will be available from Hannah at the bar. We need to collect 154 signatures before next Tuesday, so please support us this week!
