This Week at the Herdic House
The gorgeous weather continues! As we’re serving up dinner this evening under the eery light of a supermoon (and for those of you who didn’t notice the moon last night, super is indeed an understatement), the weather and the stargazing has prompted us to look far afield for a Blue Plate that’s a combo of warm and cool climes: Beech Grove honeynut squash stuffed with North African spiced lamb from Misty Mountain Farm, served over basmati rice with a fresh herb chermoula sauce. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go, like always—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. And for an appetizer, we’ll be featuring some of those ducks we picked up this past week: confit duck wings, fried and tossed in Korean barbecue sauce, with an asian pear and cilantro slaw…
Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving our Thursday night feature that feigns healthiness, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled spicy shrimp, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch. Plus, Hannah will be mixing up housemade ginger beer mules at the bar…
And for our leisure time here at the Herdic, we (like many of you, we suspect) have been out trying to take advantage of this halcyon autumn weather. Now that Liz’s kids are fully certified bike riders, that has meant some voyages out the rail trail, where Daisy rode a wonderful 9 miles yesterday in the crisp fall air. But, with weather like this, and no hard frost in sight for the city, it’s also a great time of year to get your bulbs and garlic in, or wrestle your compost from the composter into the garden beds. Three cheers for an opportunity for lazy gardeners to catch up before winter sets in!
But our big news this week at the Herdic House is that we’re hosting the talented (and very humble) Emily Green for First Friday this month. Emily usually makes an appearance in our gallery annually, and every show is new, different, and a departure from the works that proceeded it, providing us with a window into her constantly evolving creative process. And yet, each year’s work somehow becomes even more lovely than the past’s—so we’re doubly excited to see what she has to show us this year!
Emily herself will be on hand to talk about her work this Friday evening from 5-7 pm, but her art will be on display in the Lounge throughout the month of November. Stop in to meet the artist Friday, and stay to sample some of our autumnal cuisine…
- Italian wedding soup with Misty Mountain meatballs and Beech Grove escarole
- Frisée endive tossed in a warm bacon vinaigrette and finished with cubes of roasted butternut and toasted pecan-crusted goat cheese
- Pan-seared Country Meadows duck breast with caramelized pear and toasted pistachio, served over roasted root vegetables and frosted kale
- Grandma Daisy’s classic pumpkin bourbon cheesecake with a toasted walnut crust
P.S. Don’t forget to grab tickets (while they last) to our Daisy’s Fools party on November 15 at 7:00 pm, replete with champagne, gilded hors d’oeuvres of all types, and delicious dancing to the strains of Fats Walter and the Susquehanna Boomrats! Tickets are $75 and can be reserved via email (hit us up at herdichouse@gmail.com) or phone at 570.322.0165. Beautiful fools, indeed…
P.P.S. You may have heard that Liz was reelected to her city council position yesterday. Thanks to all those folks out there who supported her with their words, their ideas and/or their votes. Here’s to another four years of trying to make the best decisions for the City of Williamsport!
