This Week at the Herdic House
Liz is heading out of town this evening, for a very special girls’ night out (to see Sturgill Simpson!), so Hunter, Andrew and Sam are on tap for our Blue Plate madness (okay, they usually handle most of it anyway, but now they have creative control). Consequently, our Blue Plate has a Hunter-esque spin to it, which should make it all the more delicious: a Misty Mountain meatball stroganoff, with a mushroom and pink peppercorn cream over Deb Allison’s organic fettuccine. It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. We’ll hope to see you out tonight!
Don’t miss our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus our Thursday night feature that pretends to be healthy, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled spicy shrimp, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch…plus Hannah will be mixing up simple and perfect fresh lime gimlets at the bar…
Turning 40 is as confusingly bittersweet for a restaurant as it is for a human being, as it turns out. We’ve spent this year concocting grand plans for celebrations, doing some small facelifts around the place, and sifting through photos of the good old days, wondering where all these people have gone—both a host of old friends, old customers and former staff who’ve moved on, and our own much younger selves, less wrinkled and jaded. But some perspectives are different when it’s a restaurant that’s aging: 40 years of good food and great times are always a pleasure to reminisce about, but looking to the future is a bit less daunting when you’ve got multiple generations and ages in the mix (here’s looking at you, Dante!)
This weekend in particular, however, it’s time to party, as the Herdic House officially heads over the hill…to where exactly? Perhaps the “grand dame restaurant” phase of our existence? Or maybe just 40 more years of good eats, late night carousing and trying, in our confused way, to make the world a more delicious place? Wherever we’re going after 40, we’re going to dance and shimmy our way there all night on Saturday, or at least as late as this big old restaurant can handle it!
But a heads up (like so many other notes this year—our dance card has been pretty full for an old lady), that we’ll be closed for regular dining on Saturday night, November 16, and that the tickets for our Gala event officially sold out several weeks ago. But that doesn’t mean you can’t join our 40-year party some other night! We’ll be right here serving dinner for the rest of the year—and even lunch when we get to December—and we’ll be delighted to celebrate this milestone anniversary with you all the way to 2025…
