Wreathed in holiday spirit, this week at the Herdic House

This Week at the Herdic House

Since the threat of winter weather today has turned out to be largely that—a threat, and nothing more—we figured it was high time to set about publishing news of our Blue Plate for this week. It’s a house favorite: roasted acorn squash, stuffed with Misty Mountain Farm ham and sausage, gruyere cheese, savory vegetables and just enough cubed bread to make it a true stuffing,  It’s $18 at our House, and $20 to go, like always—but, per usual, our number of to-go orders will be very limited. And Liz is making a bacon-inflected potato-leek soup with cheddar, to banish those colder-than-usual December blues…

Plus, we’ll give you a heads up about a change of routine next week: on December 18, our Blue Plate Special is moving from Wednesday to Thursday evening one last time in 2025 (and for the final Blue Plate of 2025, come to think of it, since we won’t be serving a Blue Plate on Christmas or New Year’s Eve). We have a handful of larger groups booked on December 17, and we’ll have more room for our usual Blue Plate crowd on Thursday, December 18!

Come join us for our Thursday happy hours at the bar, from 5-7 pm, with $1 off all beers and $2 off wines by the glass. Plus we’ll be serving our Thursday night feature that feigns healthiness, all while loaded with the tangy umami of ranch dressing: house favorite Herdic Pittsburgh salad, this week served with grilled spicy shrimp, fresh-cut fries, grated cheddar and parmesan ranch.

As the Christmas season is really hitting its stride around the Herdic House, we find there’s not much that we can promise about the rest of our plans for this week. We’ve got a hectic week of lunches and dinners ahead of us (okay, okay, it’s only four days, but who’s counting?), and we’re not sure what delicious features this week might bring, nor what holiday happiness or happenstance it might hold. What we can tell you is that there are few things more wonderful than spending the holidays surrounded by loving people delighted to be seeing one another, and that that is a privilege we’re fortunate to have each week of the Christmas season at the Herdic House.

So we’re set on making the most of the holidays here at the Herdic, both while we’re in the restaurant (making gingerbread, peppermint ice cream, yule logs and all manner of holiday fare) and while we’re out on our own reconnaissance on the weekends. This past weekend featured a chilly but heavenly scented wreath-making workshop at Rider Park (check out Daisy with her woodland halo above), marred only slightly by Anaïs’s total meltdown. And this coming weekend, we’ll be riding the Santa Express (who says holiday joy can’t depart from the back parking lot of a Burger King?) and enjoying the theatrics of A Christmas Carol, performed by the Community Theatre League. We hope you’re making the most of the festive season too, as we rush onward toward the longest night of the year and the bacchanal of Christmas, and then, headlong and full of hope, into the new year…
